Why don't Buddhists wear anything white in their hair?

I had a friend who said she isn't supposed to wear white things (e.g. rubber bands for pony tails, hats, etc.) on her head because it is forbidden in Buddhism. Another person also told me that white has some negative significance to the Buddhists.

What does this color mean to them? Thanks!

Why don't Buddhists wear anything white in their hair?

There's no such thing in Buddhism. For a Buddhist, white is just a colour. In fact, for Buddhists, there are no such 'beliefs' or 'taboos' as in other religious beliefs.

The idea that you mentioned was a Chinese cultural idea where wearing 'black' or 'white' signifies mourning.

This is a very common escapism problem with most Asians/Asian belief when they don't know how to answer something, or simply because they are worshipping ancestral dieties, they tell you they're Buddhist and their practices are 'Buddhism'.

Did you know, that in fact, most Buddhists countries consider the colour white as 'purity'? Buddhist Anagarika (a Buddhist student at a monastery but not a monk) instead of the yellow robes for monks.

Why don't Buddhists wear anything white in their hair?

yes it goes back to ancient babylon

Why don't Buddhists wear anything white in their hair?

It doesn't mean anything to Buddhists as a religion, but in some Asian cultures, white is the color of mourning.

Why don't Buddhists wear anything white in their hair?

Maybe it has something associated with death. For Chinese, the women wear white flowers in their hair to signify mourning for their dead.

Why don't Buddhists wear anything white in their hair?

because white shows dirt too fast to make wearing it fashionably practical.

Why don't Buddhists wear anything white in their hair?

I am a buddhist and I can honestly say I have never heard of this. I've even been taught be Tibetan Geshe's ordained by the Dalai Lama and no one ever mentioned this. Which form of Buddhism does she practice? I can't imagine any 'rule' outlawing the use of white.....I have no idea.

Why don't Buddhists wear anything white in their hair?

Absolutely hear say :P .......

I never heard of such thing before ..... LOL .... Nothing in Buddhism states you cannot wear anything white in the hair.

But for Chinese, especially taoist, white colour worn on the hair (It used to be flowers) signify that person is mourning for a lost parent. It is used to pay respect to the dead.

Why don't Buddhists wear anything white in their hair?

White is normally the mourning color for asian ppl like chinese, japanese. To become a buddhist mean you must do some ceremony of "enter the door", while most chinese have never do that and some don't even know what it is. In fact, most chinese claim that they are buddhist just because their parent is praying to some Buddha figure without really understanding Buddhism.

Why don't Buddhists wear anything white in their hair?

In Japan, white is the color of mourning for a dead person so they have negative ideas regarding the color white.

Buddhist monks never wear white in their hair because they don't have any.

In Thailand there is no such thing as a female monk but they do have female students who study in a Temple and wear only white.

Buddhism itself has no rules regarding color of skin, cloths, hair ornaments or anything else.

Why don't Buddhists wear anything white in their hair?

there is nothing on earth like that .You can wear any kind of hat which is suitable.

You can wear any kind of a cloth as a Buddhist which is descent and suitable to the occasion.

Why don't Buddhists wear anything white in their hair?

Yea, that sounds more like a cultural thing than a religious rule.
