Im thinking that Metallica has to be one. Their downfall seemed to happen after they cut their hair.

Alice Cooper went mellow for a while in the late 70's. He had some big hits with "I never Cry", "You and Me", %26amp; "How You Gonna See Me Now". They were very mushie love songs. I'm glad he is back to his old mean self now.

Just from the title, Metallica was going to be my answer. The hair cutting didn't help, and then the whole Napster fiasco.. otherwise maybe, Bon Jovi or Bryan Adams..

lmao metallica def. screwed up but another one would be Greenday cause once they started to wear eyeliner and dye their hair their music turned to crap, or another one is System Of A Down cause as Serj grows his hair out he starts to make crappy song like look at his solo album and how good that is, its cause his hair isnt long lmao. And look at their old music and how much better it was than Hypnotize or Mesmerize.

When disco was big, some bands/artists tried to jump on the bandwagon to cash in. Most were hilarious failures.

The Rolling Stones and Paul McCartney come to mind.

yes Metallica did ruin themselves when they sold out, other than that, just about any 80's hair metal band. most of them tried to change their image to keep up with the times, but no one cared about anything but their hair metal. That's why when I advise musicians, I simply tell them to remain true to their roots, don't change just to fit in, or else you wont stand out.

haha almost all the bands have completely ruined their careers!!! Atreyu is a huge one! they completely changed! Poison the Well is horrible now... everyone is changing following the "scene" kids. so pretty much all the bands in my opinion

Rod Stewart's Do ya Think I'm Sexy was an abomination. As he aged and did the American Classics series, he rebounded in the eyes of the public. KISS masking and unmasking definitely changed their fortunes...some good , some bad.

I think Metallica and Van Halen simply made one to many albums and should have retired.

milli vanilli. L.O.L. when they opened their mouth and try to sing they're own songs. it ruined them.

KISS when they unmasked in the 80's. It kept the band alive but lost alot of there 70's hardcore fanbase. But the fanbase was revived when they remasked in 1996.

Ughhh, Fall Out Boy went mainstream....Their music is this pop rock ****. i still love them but their old music was what i fell in love with.
